A b o u t U s The Seahorse is the brainchild of award winning restaurateur, food writer, chef and founder of the renowned FishWorks chain Mitch Tonks and long term friends Mark Ely and Mat Prowse. Inspired by travels in the Mediterranean, The Seahorse, with seats for 40 diners, offers an experience with great food served in a relaxed but informal surroundings.
Located on the waterfront overlooking the river Dart we specialise in seafood and simple grilled meat dishes as well as house specialities. Dishes include a starter of Dartmouth crab, dressed to order, a plate of local fried seafood, a cutlet of English veal with anchovy and parsley or chicken livers wrapped in sage and grilled over wood burning fires.
Dartmouth is surrounded by fantastic farmers and growers and Mitch with his experience, contacts and reputation, as well as living a stones throw away in Brixham is able to secure the very best of locally landed seafood. The Seahorse celebrates seasonality from regional markets; olive and rapeseed oils, south-west cheeses, fruits and vegetables and cured meats will also feature. The Wine list, put together Tim McLaughlin-Green, leading London wine supplier and sommelier, features bottles and magnums of certain vintages and on a daily basis we choose wines from the list, available by the glass to customers, giving the opportunity to sample a good range of the wine list. Many of the wines are sourced direct including the Braida Estate in Piedmont Italy.
P e a r l f i s h e r Our courtesy launch, Pearlfisher, can take guests across the river at the end of the evening up until midnight but please make sure to book! This service is for the exclusive use of guests of the Seahorse and can take a maximum of 4 persons.
A b o u t M i t c h Mitch Tonks, voted Tatler’s restaurateur of the year, and labeled by The Independent as 'a fishmonger for the 21st Century' has been driven by an honest passion to enthuse, cook for and inspire others to enjoy seafood.
His list of awards and recognitions is testament to Mitch’s hard work and inspiration; 'Best Fishmonger', ‘Best London seafood restaurant’, ‘Best fish book in the World Gourmand Awards’, nominated as Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year, listed as one of the top 100 most influential foodies by Hotel and Caterer are just a selection. A favourite on BBC Saturday Kitchen and UKTV’s Market Kitchen, Mitch’s good humour and constant relish for good food and the good life tend to be infectious. Born in 1966 Mitch spent the first 24 years of his life by the sea; sailing on it, skiing on it and fishing in it. After working as an accountant Mitch decided to fulfil his passion for seafood by opening a specialist fishmonger in Bath, a radical career change. This proved to be a huge success both personally and commercially, and lead to the creation of the acclaimed Fishworks chain of seafood restaurants, which now numbers 13 quality fishmongers, restaurants and cookery schools in London and the South West. Mitch is still a director of FishWorks and has also worked for the last 3 years with Young’s Seafood, bringing with him his world of experience as a fishmonger, chef and restaurateur. His involvement has been very positive and rewarding. Mitch has toured many of the fisheries and facilities of Young’s and written enthusiastically about the trips. The Seahorse restaurant is Mitch’s new venture with his old schoolfriend Mark Ely and friend and chef Mat Prowse. The restaurant is located in Dartmouth and will be based on experiences gained from travels to Italy and Spain, providing fabulous food in relaxed surroundings.
